Born in Durban, South Africa, Matt McGillivray was destined to be in the water. Growing up in a surf lifesaving family he spent hours in the ocean every day and learnt quickly. At nine years old, he followed in the footsteps of his older brothers and began surfing. For his tenth birthday, his dad drove him out to Jeffrey’s Bay where he caught two waves – and the rest, as they say, is history.

By his early teens Matt was entering contests around the world and had set his sights on the World Tour. In 2019, with signature power turns and consistent results, Matt finally reached his goal. He is currently ranked #13 on the WSL World Championship Tour.
